The Third Annual Bilateral Consultations between the Royal Government of Bhutan and the Government of the Commonwealth of Australia will be held on 28th October 2014 in Thimphu. Bhutan observed United Nations Day on October 24, 2014 with the lighting of 1000 butter lamps in the Kuenray, Tashichhodzong. Hon’ble Tshogpon Jigme Zangpo, Speaker of the National Assembly of Bhutan graced the occasion, which was attended by Cabinet Ministers, senior Government and the UN officials. UN Day marks the day on which the UN Charter entered into force on October 24, 1945.
On the occasion, the Foreign Secretary Yeshey Dorji highlighted the contributions made by the United Nations towards the socio-economic development of Bhutan. He expressed the Royal Government’s appreciation to the UN and its Agencies for their support and cooperation in advancing the partnership. He reaffirmed Bhutan’s conviction that the ideals of the United Nations are timeless and evermore relevant in today’s world. Read more
Thimphu, 21 October The European Union Commissioner for Development, H.E. Mr. Andris Piebalgs, arrived in the country today on a six day official visit. He is accompanied by Ambassador Joao Cravinho, Ambassador of the EU to Bhutan in New Delhi and other officials from the European Union Commission in Brussels, Belgium.
The European Union in August last year announced tripling of their bilateral assistance to Bhutan.EU will provide Euro 42 million assistance to Bhutan for the period 2014-2020 which will focus to strengthen civil society, local governance, and develop sustainable rural livelihood. To welcome the EU decision, Finance Minister Lyonpo Namgay Dorji and the Commissioner Piebalgs will sign the EU Multi-annual Indicative Programmee (MIP) document in the evening of 22nd October. Joint Press Release on Mutual Visa Exemption Agreement between Bhutan and Switzerland
Thimphu, 8 October 2014 – A mutual visa exemption agreement for holders of diplomatic and official passports was signed today by Foreign Secretary Yeshey Dorji and H.E. Linus von Castelmur, Ambassador of Switzerland to Bhutan at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gyalyong Tshokhang. The waiver of the visa requirement for officials and diplomats is an expression of trust and solidarity between the two countries and of the desire to further strengthen friendly relations. This arrangement will greatly facilitate official travel between the two countries and strengthen contacts and cooperation. Holders of official and diplomatic passports are permitted to stay for a period of up to 90 days without visa. Read more
