img_4163A ten-member parliamentary delegation led by Hon. Tshogpon Jigme Zangpo is participating in the 135th session of the IPU Assembly in Geneva from 24-27 October 2016.  The IPU Assembly is held two times a year.

The 135th Assembly’s General debate is on the theme ‘Human rights abuses as precursors of conflict: Parliaments as early responders’. Hon. Tshogpon addressed the Assembly on the afternoon of 24TH October 2016. He conveyed the warm greetings and best wishes of His Majesty The King and the people of Bhutan and underscored the importance of human rights for peace and development. He said that the Royal Government’s policy is built on the principal of sustainable peace and happiness to ensure inclusive development both through governance and legislation and that this endeavour of the government is clearly reflected in our unique but profound development philosophy of Gross National Happiness.

Hon. Tshogpon will hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts including with Hon. Tony Smith MP, the Speaker of the Australian Parliament and Hon. Mrs. Bilaibhan Sampatisiri, Chairperson of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the Parliament of Thailand.

Hon’ble Members from the National Assembly and the National Council and Secretaries-General of the two bodies are participating in the various committees and other meetings during the course of the Assembly.
