Lyonchen Tshering Tobgay will be visiting lndia from 25 to 28 May, 2014 at the invitation of the Government of lndia to attend the swearing-in-ceremony of H.E. H. E. Mr. Arjun B. Thapa, Secretary General, SAARC is on an introductory visit to Bhutan from 18 to 20 May 2014. He is accompanied by his spouse and Ambassador Singye Dorji, Director Bhutan at SAARC Secretariat.
The Secretary General received an audience with His Majesty the King today. The Secretary General also called on the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and Foreign Secretary and discussed matters relating to SAARC and other issues of regional interest.
H.E. Arjun B. Thapa of Nepal assumed the post of Secretary General on 12 March 2014 for a tenure of three years. He succeeded Mr. Ahmed Saleem of Maldives.
Mr. Kinley Dorji the first Secretary General of the Colombo Plan Secretariat from Bhutan assumed office on 2nd May, 2014. The Staff of the Colombo Plan Secretariat in Colombo, Sri Lanka welcomed the new Secretary General in a simple ceremony in the Secretariat. The Royal Government of Bhutan presented its second National Human Rights Report under the Universal Periodic Review mechanism to the 19th Session of the Working Group of the Human Rights Council in Geneva yesterday.
The Bhutanese delegation was led by Lyonpo Damcho Dorji, Minister for Home and Cultural Affairs, and comprised of representatives from different Ministries and Agencies including a member of the CSO. Lyonpo introduced the National Report covering the progress and achievements made by Bhutan since it’s last review in 2009 as well as the challenges and constraints faced by the country. Read more
First Visit of the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to Bhutan
The Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), Ms. Christiana Figueres, will visit Bhutan from 1 - 3 May 2014. Her Excellency will pay a courtesy call on the Hon’ble Prime Minster and Hon’ble Foreign Minister and will meet with senior officials of the Royal Government. Discussions will be held on the ways to build upon the fruitful partnership in the context of climate change and to further strengthen the progress in responding to the challenges confronting our contemporary climate. Bhutan’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Aum Pema Choden, presented credentials to H.E. Mohamed Abdul Hamid, President of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, today at Bangabhaban, the official residence of the President in Dhaka.
During the courtesy call following the ceremony, Aum Pema Choden conveyed the greetings and well-wishes of His Majesty the King and the people of Bhutan to the President and the people of Bangladesh and said she was highly honoured to serve in this important position.
