Bhutan – Denmark Partnership Transition Event

Today, Bhutan and Denmark are marking an event which will see the phasing out of development cooperation and the beginning of a new partnership. This Transition Event represents a significant milestone in the history of Bhutan –Denmark bilateral relations as it celebrates the past achievements and prepares the two countries for the new relationship.

Over three and a half decades, Denmark has been a strong and steadfast partner of Bhutan in her socio-economic development efforts. As a result, Bhutan has made significant progress in all areas resulting in Denmark’s decision to phase out its assistance. The two countries are extremely satisfied with the success of the development cooperation and have now decided that they should move on to a new partnership as provided in the Framework for continued Danish-Bhutanese Partnership signed in June 2012. The Framework provides for cooperation in fields of mutual interest including global security, democracy, good governance, human rights and rule-based international cooperation; environment and climate change; and economic, cultural, commercial and educational cooperation, including through private and institutional partnerships. The new partnership is expected to further strengthen the existing ties of close friendship and cooperation between Bhutan and Denmark.

While the Representation Office of Denmark (ROD) in Thimphu will be closed following this event, we welcome the opening of the Royal Danish Honorary Consulate and the launching of the Bhutan – Denmark Friendship Association. These two institutions will promote and enhance the bilateral relations between Bhutan and Denmark, particularly through promotion of people to people contacts.

Diplomatic relations between Bhutan and Denmark was established on 13 August 1985.
