{"id":571,"date":"2021-12-16T01:10:15","date_gmt":"2021-12-16T01:10:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mfa.gov.bt\/pmbny\/?page_id=571"},"modified":"2021-12-17T00:05:19","modified_gmt":"2021-12-17T00:05:19","slug":"background","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.mfa.gov.bt\/pmbny\/background\/","title":{"rendered":"Background"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Bhutan to the United Nations in New York (PMB NY) is one of the eight resident diplomatic missions that the Royal Government of Bhutan maintains overseas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PMB NY is one of the three multilateral posts that represent Bhutan\u2019s interests in the United Nations system.\u00a0 In addition to UN Headquarters in New York, Bhutan also maintains resident missions to the UN Office in Geneva, and UN-ESCAP in Bangkok.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mission was established in 1971 following the admission of Bhutan as a member of the United Nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>The Mission has three important mandates:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a member of the United Nations, to participate and contribute to the work of the United Nations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promote friendly relations and cooperation with member states of the United Nations. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Permanent Representative is concurrently accredited to Canada and Brazil.\u00a0 The Third important mandate is therefore <\/span>to promote and strengthen bilateral relations and foster closer cooperation between Bhutan and\u00a0 Canada,\u00a0 and between Bhutan and Brazil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>The objectives of the Mission are:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Promote Bhutan\u2019s sovereign independence and strengthen our role as a responsible and constructive member of the international community<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To contribute to the process of socio-economic development of Bhutan<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To promote friendly bilateral relations with all countries.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strengthen the institutional capacity of the Mission to ensure that its operations are smooth, efficient and cost-effective<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400; text-align: justify;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To support and advance Bhutan&#8217;s commitment to the maintenance of international peace and security through UN peace keeping.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Bhutan to the United Nations in New York (PMB NY) is one of the eight resident diplomatic missions that the Royal Government of Bhutan maintains overseas.
