Ambassador Sonam Tobgay attended the Australian Observance of The United Nations Day of Vesak at the Great Hall of the Federal Parliament House in Canberra on 14 May. The event was organised by the Organizing Committee for Australian Observance of the UN Day of Vesak supported by the Buddhist Federation of Australia and its spiritual and parliamentary patrons.<\/div>\n

The celebration also marked the 25th anniversary of the passing of the UN Resolution on 15th December 1999 (Agenda item 174) recognising Vesak, the full moon day of the month of May, as an international day to commemorate the birth, enlightenment and passing of Sakyamuni Gautama Buddha.<\/div>\n

As a country that supported the United Nations resolution recognizing Vesak Day, Ambassador Sonam Tobgay delivered a remark on behalf of the Royal Government. He conveyed that Vesak is the most sacred day for millions of Buddhists around the world. By recognising this Day, the United Nations acknowledges the contribution that Buddhism has made for over two and a half millennia and continues to make to the spiritual development of humanity. He added that as a vibrant multicultural society that also respects diverse traditions, the celebration also reflects Australia\u2019s long-standing support for international peace and understanding.<\/div>\n
