Under the historic auspices of His Majesty the King Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the Fourth Druk Gyalpo of the Kingdom of Bhutan and His Highness Late Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Amir of the State of Kuwait, Bhutan and Kuwait established diplomatic relations with the appointment of the Consul General Pem Tshering in Kuwait City on 23 May 1983. It was upgraded to Royal Bhutanese Embassy (RBE) with its first resident Ambassador of Bhutan to Kuwait on 23 April 1986. The incumbent Chitem Tenzin is the 9th Ambassador. He presented his Credentials to His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Amir of Kuwait on 16 August 2021.

The State of Kuwait established its resident Embassy in Thimphu with the appointment of its first resident Ambassador in Thimphu on 29 December 2010. Until then the Ambassadors of Kuwait in New Delhi in India were accredited as the non-resident Ambassadors to Bhutan. Mr. Fadel Haider Al-Hassan has been the Charge d’ Affairs since 30th April 2017.

The State of Kuwait since several decades has been supporting Bhutan in its developmental efforts through various agencies such as the Amiri Diwan and Prime Minister’s Diwan, Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED), Central Bank of Kuwait, and the Kuwait Football Association. In recent times, Bhutan received generous support in its natural disaster mitigation and rehabilitation efforts and COVID -19 related assistance. Bhutan and Kuwait work closely in various multilateral fora and several important agreements as Memorandum of Understandings (MoU) are in the pipeline to promote further trade, economic, air service cooperation and bilateral relations between the two countries.

Since the early 1990’s there have been several important bilateral goodwill visits at the highest States and Governments officials’ levels and growing people to people contact and friendship.

RBE in Kuwait also serves as the Embassy of Bhutan to the State of United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain. Ambassador Chitem Tenzin presented his Credentials to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the State of United Arab Emirates, and Ruler of Dubai on 10 October 2021.
