H.E. V. Namgyel, Ambassador of Bhutan to Japan and H.E. Mr. Takeshi Yagi, Ambassador of Japan to Bhutan signed the Exchange of Notes today for the Rehabilitation of Takli Irrigation System and KR II 2012 for under privileged farmers, and the Grant Contract for the project for Supply of Tracked Excavator for waste Management in Thimphu city.

The Government of Japan is extending to the Royal Government of Bhutan a grant assistance of 110 million yen for the Food Security Project for Underprivileged Farmers KR II 2012; 46 million yen for the Rehabilitation of Takli Irrigation System in Sarpang district, and 8.9 million yen for the Project for Supply of Tracked Excavator for Waste Management in Thimphu City.

The Taklai irrigation system which is situated along the Taklai River flowing through the gewogs of Chuzagnag and Sershong in Sarpang is the oldest irrigation scheme in Bhutan. Due to successive flooding of Taklai river in the past few years, the Taklai irrigation intake and the network structure network has become vulnerable to flooding and erosion which is affecting agricultural activities in the area.

The Royal Government of Bhutan has been promoting farm mechanization to improve agricultural produce in Bhutan. Till date Bhutan has received eight grants for underprivileged farmers (KR II), and distribute about 1,519 units of two wheel tractors to the farmers throughout the country.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ambassador V. Namgyel said that Japan has been one of Bhutan’s oldest friend and development partner. Japan has extended generous assistance in many areas, particularly in the field of agriculture, and has contributed greatly towards the national goal of achieving economic self-reliance.

Ambassador V. Namgyel conveyed the deep appreciation of the government and people of Bhutan to the government and people of Japan for their continued friendship and support over the years.
