un-dayBhutan observed United Nations Day on October 24, 2014 with the lighting of 1000 butter lamps in the Kuenray, Tashichhodzong. Hon’ble Tshogpon Jigme Zangpo, Speaker of the National Assembly of Bhutan graced the occasion, which was attended by Cabinet Ministers, senior Government and the UN officials.  UN Day marks the day on which the UN Charter entered into force on October 24, 1945.

On the occasion, the Foreign Secretary Yeshey Dorji highlighted the contributions made by the United Nations towards the socio-economic development of Bhutan. He expressed the Royal Government’s appreciation to the UN and its Agencies for their support and cooperation in advancing the partnership. He reaffirmed Bhutan’s conviction that the ideals of the United Nations are timeless and evermore relevant in today’s world.

The Resident Coordinator of the UN Christina Carlson attributed the impressive progress achieved by Bhutan in 40 years of partnership with UN Agencies to Bhutan’s stable leadership together with supportive development partners. She also conveyed on behalf of the Secretary General, the UN Organization’s gratitude for the Royal Government’s decision to participate in UN Peacekeeping missions.
