Press Release

Hon. Tshogpon Jigme Zangpo accompanied by Hon. Thrizin Dr. Sonam Kinga is leading a ten-member delegation to the 138th session of the IPU Assembly in Geneva from 24-28 March 2018. The IPU Assembly is held two times a year and the next one will also be held in Geneva in October 2018.

Tshogpoen addressed the Assembly this morning during the General debate on the theme “ strengthening the global regime for migrants and refugees: the need for evidence-based policy solutions”. Tshogpon highlighted the importance of the ongoing intergovernmental negotiations to draft the two global compacts on refugees and migrants, and the need for parliamentarians to support these efforts. In sharing Bhutan’s views, Tshogpoen stated that while migration has its benefits, it also has challenges especially for small countries from large-scale and unregulated migration.

Hon. Tshogpon also held bilateral meetings with H.E. Mrs. Gabriela Cuevas Barron, President of IPU, and with H.E. Mr. M. Thambi Durai, Deputy Speaker of India.

Hon’ble Members from the National Assembly and the National Council and Secretaries-General of the two bodies are also participating in the various committees and other meetings during the course of the Assembly.
