The 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly will begin from the 17th of September 2019 until 30th September at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Lyonchhen Dr. Lotay Tshering, Prime Minister of Bhutan will lead the Bhutanese delegation to attend the General Assembly. Lyonchhen will be accompanied by the Foreign Minister Lyonpo Dr. Tandi Dorji and senior officials from Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gross National Happiness Commission and Ministry of Finance.

Lyonchhen will address the General Assembly on 28 September 2019 on the theme ‘Galvanizing multilateral efforts for poverty eradication, quality education, climate action and inclusion”.

Apart from the General Debate, the 74th Session of the UN General Assembly will feature five high level events namely, the High Level Meeting on Universal Health Coverage and the UN Secretary General’s Climate Action Summit on 23 September; the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) or the Sustainable Development Goals Summit on 24 and 25 September; the High Level Forum on Financing for Development on 26 September and the High Level Event on SIDS Accelerated Modalities for Action (Samoa Pathway) on 27 September.

Lyonchhen is also scheduled to attend several other high level events and hold bilateral meetings with senior officials of the United Nations and Heads of Government of other member states. Lyonchhen will also meet the Bhutanese community living in New York.

Established in 1945 under the Charter of the United Nations, the General Assembly occupies a central position as the chief deliberative, policymaking and representative organ of the United Nations. Comprising all 193 Members of the United Nations, it provides a unique forum for multilateral discussion of the full spectrum of international issues covered by the Charter. It also plays a significant role in the process of standard-setting and the codification of international law.
