Foreign Minister, Lyonpo Damcho Dorji deposited this morning Bhutan’s Instrument of Ratification of the UN Convention Against Corruption. The Instrument of Ratification was deposited with the United Nations Secretary-General during the annual Treaty Event held on the side lines of the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The Convention was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in October 2003, and entered into force on 14 December 2005. The Convention has 175 State Parties. Bhutan signed the Convention on 15 September 2005 during the annual UN Treaty Event in New York on the sidelines of the 60th Session of the UNGA.
The Convention seeks to address global corruption through prevention; criminalization and law enforcement measures; international cooperation; asset recovery; technical assistance; and information exchange. The Convention is the sole universal legal instrument designed to help the public and private sectors prevent and fight corruption globally. It is the first comprehensive framework endorsed by the international community, and represents a landmark global consensus on the issue of corruption.
The Convention was ratified by the 6th Session of the National Assembly and the 16th Session of the National Council. Royal Assent was received on 20 May 2016.
